The first recorded event connected with the present site occurred in 1776 when Benedict Arnold's fleet engaged in warfare with the British Navy off Valcour's shore. Although Arnold was defeated, the defeat caused the British fleet to retire to Canada for the winter.
In 1784 Zephaniah Platt gave this present site, plus acreage to Nathaniel Platt. Congressman Joseph Sibley acquired the Valcour property in 1904 and used it until 1915. He constructed the existing boathouse to accommodate his large yacht. At the time of construction, the boathouse housed guest rooms on the upper floor. During WWI, Sibley's daughter Celia Sibley Wilson received the property and in the early 1920's, the original house was partially destroyed by fire. Mrs. Wilson had the present structure built in 1925 and upon her death in 1945; the property was passed on to her sister, Josephine Sibley Heathcote, who in turn passed it on to her daughter, Mrs. Haskell. In 1959, the property was sold to the Coastline Development Corporation of Montreal, Canada. In 1961 the corporation sold nine acres, including the main residence to Harold and Olive Baker who converted the site into a restaurant. The property was reverted to the Coastline Development Corporation in 1962. In 1963, the estate was sold to the Plattsburgh State Teachers College Benevolent and Education Association, Inc. (now known as College Auxiliary Services, Inc.) and was officially designated as the Valcour Educational Conference Center.
